Follow the 2009 Howard University Homecoming on Twitter for the Latest Breaking News, Suprises, and Events.“Ain’t no tellin where I may be/ May see me in DC at Howard Homes/ Comin, with my man Capone, Dummin/ f**kin somethin,” said the late Biggie Smalls. But Howard University’s Homecoming is nothing to rap about. We go hard. Or at least we try to. We pride ourselves in being the most talked about and entertaining college Homecoming in the world. With almost-A-list singers and celebrities crammed in every corner of The Yard as well as the united black bourgeoisie of America eyeing the week’s festivities with glaring attentiveness – its hard to not be a little excited about Homecoming. The knowledgeable student however won’t even flinch upon homecoming’s arrival as they are well aware that its all a little overhyped. But you can’t rule it out because there’s always that 1 out of every 5 Homecoming’s where magic happens: Jay-Z shows up unexpected and wows the crowd or Cam’ron gets shot 4-5 times in his Lamborghini (no offense to Cameron). So basically Howard Homecomings are sometimes good and sometimes deadly events mixed in a bag of randomness.
Yardfest (this Friday) is Homecoming’s main attraction. Everyone will be on
the Yard chillin with their family and friends while artists perform. It’s a good time to mingle around and collectively embrace the atmosphere of the Mecca. Small vendors will be set up around the area to give off that local flea market vibe. And a lot of people will monopolize on the opportunity to upstage the masses by wearing their most expensive clothing.
The streets surrounding Howard get packed quickly during Homecoming, especially Georgia Avenue. At night you’ll see enough craziness on Georgia Ave. to be amused if this is your first homecoming here. You’ll see tweaked out cars buzzing up and down the block. You’ll find droves of desperate thirty-something out-of-towners lookin for the party that they will never find. And of course you’ll see students completely smashed and coming back from the party.
The house party scene is like a double-edged sword during the week of. On one side, everyone is trying to party, have fun and get loose. On the other side party hosts tend to up the entrance fee beyond the typical 5 dollars. Also the fact that everyone is trying to ‘get it in’ means parties will likely get packed quick and shut down by the cops even quicker.
The Club scene is a bit different. If you’re willing to whip out the cash you can probably have a decent time timidly entertaining the opposite sex while paying extra on drinks for women who aren’t willing to give it up. And you are doing this all while Bow Wow and Drake pour the latest champagne into your hair and newly bought club attire.
This year’s Homecoming Football Game is Howard vs. North Carolina A&T. We’re probably going to lose, again, like we typically do. I don’t know why anyone would waste their money to even watch our poorly-rated-yet-somehow-egotistical team play (Look out for the Bisonpedia article I’m doing on them btw). Oh yea, the game is only worth watching because of the half time show. Watching the two opposing bands play off during halftime is worth the buy, that is, if you’re willing to stomach such a bad game.
The only thing I can’t be too critical about Homecoming is the Step Show. Most people will agree that the Step Show is damn-near guaranteed to entertain you. You’ll see some of your favorite Divine 9 fraternities and sororities battle it out trying to upstage one another and oftentimes stealing one another’s routines.
Other events, concerts, comedy shows, etc, are all standard, quality shows. I don’t have to elaborate too much since they all vary from year to year depending on how well the Homecoming Committee planned everything out.
And that’s about it. For more info on Homecoming the official website is
here. Have fun, enjoy the week and try to contain your giddiness. Its nothing to get crazy over, its just the best homecoming in the world.
Kanye West, “I’m happy for making a song about Homecoming and I’ma let myself finish, but Howard University had the best Homecoming of all time! ALL TIME!!!”
